Gun hunting is here!

Gun hunting is quickly approaching! Time to get out the blaze orange, sight in your guns, and make sure you have enough ammo. The weather is dropping and the thermometer is supposed to get down to low 30's. Good luck to everyone and have a good hunting season. Please post pictures of your deer!

Pope and Young

For this weeks blog post I am defining Pope and Young. Pope and Young is the club where you can enter your deer for scoring. Pope and Young scoring is only for bow and arrow. Scoring a buck is taking a tape measure and measuring all tine lengths, the circumference around the antlers, measuring the inside width from beam to beam, taking the outside spread (widest tine to tine), and measuring the tine difference of the tines. When this is done, whatever the final score is has to be over 125 inches. If your buck scores over this and you send it in to Pope and Young your buck is in the record books.

This past weekend was a great weekend for hunting; I saw ten bucks total in two days. Saturday night I knew it was going to be a great night since I rattled and grunted in a big eight pointer right away. Towards the end of the night i rattled in a small six pointer and an absolute mega buck! I drew back my bow but never got a shot at the monster buck with never ending points. I knew the next day was gonna be good, and Sunday i got into my stand at about three o' clock and the deer were already moving. I rattled in a small half rack buck right away and then fifteen minutes later the buck I shot came out. My buck went by me back and forth and finally on the fourth pass I shot him right where I needed too! It was truly a great weekend for hunting and I sure hope my dad can get the monster buck I saw saturday night.

Rut is coming

The rut is upcoming and deer hunting should be picking up pretty quick. The mercury on the thermometer is dropping, the leaves are falling off the trees, and the bucks will start chasing does. When Halloween comes around the rut should be pretty close to peak. The weekend of the 22nd I will bring out the buck growl call and my rattling horns. The pre rut should be in swing by then and bucks will be getting aggressive and looking for does in heat. Good luck to all you bowhunters and may the rut be in your favor!

Best Bowhunting Memory

Bowhunting has always been my favorite hobby. I started bowhunting when I was twelve years old, and I have been bowhunting ever since. I have shot four bucks with the bow so far in my life. My most memorable hunt was two seasons ago. It was the 5th day of the 2008 bowhunting season and I had gotten out of school early to go bowhunting. It was a wednesday, the only day I had off from work. I got out in the tree stand that day a little after 3:30 p.m. About forty minutes later, five deer came through about 30 yards from my stand. I could tell the front three deer were does but I was unsure what the back two deer were. A couple minutes later one nice buck came out from behind the thick green brush. I was getting really excited because I kept wondering what the other deer was behind that thick brush. Finally the back deer walked out and it was the huge drop tine buck I had seen the night before coming home from work! He swaggered into a perfect shooting lane about 25 yards away. The buck was staring up at me in my tree stand. I was sure that he was gonna bust but he turned his head and i drew my bow back. The arrow launched from my PSE bow and struck the giant buck right behind the shoulder. I knew I made the perfect shot, and after waiting 30 minutes I got down from my stand and walked 40 yards over to my trophy! He was a 13 point buck and ended up weighing 255 lbs! This was my fondest bowhunting moment ever!!

Bowhunting is my favorite time of the year. I love the outdorrs and the adventure of being in the wilderness; therefore it is essential to have all of the necessary preparations. Since no one enjoys the spoils of procrastination, especially when it comes time for bow hunting, make sure you have everything you need ahead of time. Bow hunting season is almost in session again; therefore it is time to get all of the equipment and scouting done. Some things to remember are broad heads, arrows, sighting in your bow, camo clothing, scents, and stand locations. If you don't procrastinate and get the essential things done, I guarantee you will find that your hunt will be much more enjoyable. Best of luck this season!!

Hunting season preparations

Its getting that time of year to start checking old tree stands, hanging new ones, scouting for deer, sighting in your bow, and checking your trail cameras! Make sure you have all the equipment you need for this hunting season. Arrows, broadheads, camo clothing for early season, camo clothing for late season, game calls, food attractant, ect. Being prepared and having the right equipment will help you bag that trophy buck you are looking for.
